No. 77 e.e. cummings
came across this poem today trying to find a practice text for Comp3121. Enjoy.
77
i am a little church (no great cathedral )
far from the splendor and squalor of hurrying cities
-i do not worry if briefer days grow briefest,
i am not sorry when sun and rain make april
my life is the life of the reaper and the sower;
my prayers are prayers of earth's own clumsily striving
(finding and losing and laughing and crying )children
whose any sadness or joy is my grief or my gladness
around me surges a miracle of unceasing
birth and glory and death and resurrection:
over my sleeping self float flaming symbols
of hope,and i wake to a perfect patience of mountains
i am a little church(far from the frantic
world with its rapture and anguish )at peace with nature
-i do not worry if longer nights grow longest;
i am not sorry when silence becomes singing
winter by spring,i lift my diminutive spire to
merciful Him Whose only now is forever:
standing erect in the deathless truth of His presence
(welcoming humbly His light and proudly His darkness )
far from the splendor and squalor of hurrying cities
-i do not worry if briefer days grow briefest,
i am not sorry when sun and rain make april
my life is the life of the reaper and the sower;
my prayers are prayers of earth's own clumsily striving
(finding and losing and laughing and crying )children
whose any sadness or joy is my grief or my gladness
around me surges a miracle of unceasing

i am not sorry when silence becomes singing

merciful Him Whose only now is forever:
standing erect in the deathless truth of His presence
(welcoming humbly His light and proudly His darkness )

More Than Skies-Check them out!
This is definitely not a music blog but there are occasional notable exceptions.
Check out More Than Skies free EP and their band page here.
They are playing at the Davis College Cafe on February 19th.
It should be awesome and you should be there!

Digital Ties
This is a really excellent article entitled In the World of Facebook from the NYRB on the history Facebook and possible implications of Facebook Connect and their advertising processes. Directly related to the interpersonal time and energy we invest into sites like Facebook is an article from NPR Digital Tears: Breakups And Social Networks examining the problem of when relationships end the impact not just on the individual but also on both individual's networks of people. Where these networks used to be simply physical ending relationships now also need to deal with the problem of severing electronic ties.

You should read this
Maria Bustillos has a piece published as In Praise of High-Speed Overload over at The Awl.
It bears some thinking about. I am not sure that I agree 110% but it does beat the standard sort of whining that the Web(s) have destroyed all knowledge. I think the implication of knowledge as the antidote to loneliness has some virtue.
This article is the semantic equivalent of launching oneself in the cannonball style to land with a magnificent kerplash in the informational ball pit and allowing oneself to frolick about in sheer and utter abandon.
